2024 VERMONT VOTER GUIDE
1.Voter Registration
No Deadline
However, if you register online the day before the election or on Election Day, your application may not be processed and your name may not appear on the checklist and you may be asked to fill out another application at the polls. To be sure your name appears on the checklist, please register by the Friday before the election.
2. Check Your Registration
Why check your registration? Your address is where election officials send notices, application forms to receive your ballot in the mail, and more. Additionally, poll workers will check if the address on your voter registration matches the address on your ID at the polls.
Check/Update Your Registration Online
Checklist:
- Is your name spelled correctly? (Correct hyphenations, middle initials, etc)
- Correct Address
- Active Voter Status (if not update by sending in another online/mail voter application)
- Correct Date of Birth
- Correct Political Party Preference
- Take a time-stamped photograph or screenshot of your registration, and take it with you to the polls as proof of your registration.
3. Voter ID Law
Source: Ballotpedia
Vermont does not require voters to present identification while voting, in most cases. However, first-time voters who registered by mail are required to present identification at the polls. Accepted forms of identification include:
- Valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport)
- Current utility bill
- Current bank statement
- Another government document containing your residential address
4. Order Your Absentee Mail Ballot
Deadline to apply for Absentee Mail Ballot: Must be received by 5:00 PM on November 4, 2024
We recommend requesting your absentee mail ballot as soon as possible and well in advance of this deadline in order to ensure that you receive your ballot in time.
Request Absentee Mail Ballot Online
For a list of ballot drop box locations, visit: https://www.vpirg.org/vermont-ballot-drop-box-lookup/
- You may return ballots to polling places on Election Day.
- If you are sick or have a disability, a ballot can be delivered to your home on Election Day. You may request an absentee ballot up until 5 p.m. on the day before the election. Two justices of the peace (of different parties when possible) will deliver a ballot to you, and then will bring the ballot back to the polling place so that it can be placed in the ballot box and counted.
Deadline to return Absentee Mail Ballot: Must be received by 7:00 PM on November 5, 2024
5. Early Voting Information
In-person early voting is not available. Voters can apply for and cast absentee ballots in-person as soon as they are available, until the day before Election Day.
- For a list of ballot drop box locations, visit: https://www.vpirg.org/vermont-ballot-drop-box-lookup/
- All early voter absentee ballot requests must be submitted by 5 p.m. or by the close of the town clerk’s office on the day before the election. For a list of town clerk locations, visit: https://outside.vermont.gov/dept/sos/Elections%20Division/voters/townclerkguide.pdf
- If you do not receive your early voter absentee within a reasonable time after your request, you may apply to the town clerk for a duplicate ballot. A sworn statement affirming that you have not received the original ballot or that the ballot was lost must accompany the application.
- If a duplicate early voter absentee ballot is issued and both the duplicate and original early voter absentee ballots are received before the close of polls on election day, the ballot with the earlier postmark or received first shall be counted.
- If you lose your absentee ballot after you receive it, or you never receive an absentee ballot that was mailed to you, you can sign an affidavit for lost or undelivered absentee ballot and the town clerk will provide you a replacement ballot.
