2024 NORTH CAROLINA VOTER GUIDE

     

    1.Voter Registration

    Deadline to Register/Update: October 11, 2024

    If you miss the voter registration deadline, you may still be able to register and vote or make changes (except for party affiliation) to your voter registration and vote during the early voting period.     2. Check Your Registration

    Why check your registration? Your address is where election officials send notices, application forms to receive your ballot in the mail, and more. Additionally, poll workers will check if the address on your voter registration matches the address on your ID at the polls.

    Checklist:

    • Is your name spelled correctly? (Correct hyphenations, middle initials, etc)
    • Correct Address
    • Active Voter Status (if not update by sending in another online/mail voter application)
    • Correct Date of Birth
    • Correct Political Party Preference
    • Take a time-stamped photograph or screenshot of your registration, and take it with you to the polls as proof of your registration.

     

    3. Voter ID Law

    North Carolina requires voters to present photo ID when voting.

    The following documents were acceptable forms of identification as of May 2024:

    Any of the following that is unexpired, or expired for one year or less:

    • North Carolina driver’s license
    • State ID from the NCDMV (also called “non-operator ID”)
    • Driver’s license or non-driver ID from another state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory (only if voter registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election)
    • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
    • North Carolina voter photo ID card issued by a county board of elections (…)
    • College or university student ID approved by the State Board of Elections (…)
    • State or local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections (…)

    Note: A voter 65 or older may use an expired form of acceptable ID if the ID was unexpired on their 65th birthday.

    Any of the following, regardless of whether the ID contains an expiration or issuance date:

    • Military or veterans ID card (with photo) issued by the U.S. government
    • Tribal enrollment card (with photo) issued by a tribe recognized by the State of North Carolina or the federal government
    • ID card (with photo) issued by an agency of the U.S. government or the State of North Carolina for a public assistance program (Note: Although this is an acceptable form of ID under North Carolina law, the State Board is not aware of any such ID in circulation that contains a photo. All IDs for voting are required to have a photo.)

    4. Order Your Absentee Mail Ballot

    Deadline to apply for Absentee Mail Ballot: Must be received by 5:00 PM on October 29, 2024

    We recommend requesting your absentee mail ballot as soon as possible and well in advance of this deadline in order to ensure that you receive your ballot in time.

    Deadline to return Absentee Mail Ballot: Must be received by 7:30 PM on November 5, 2024

     

    5. Early Voting Information

    Early voting is available from October 17 to 3:00 pm on November 2, 2024.

    • Early Voting sites and times vary from county to county. To find polling places and schedules in your county, visit: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/EVSite/
    • During the early voting period, voters may cast a ballot at any early voting site in the county. This is different than Election Day, when registered voters must vote at their assigned polling place.

    Poll workers must be 17 years old or over, and a registered voter (if over 18) in their county.
