    3. Voter ID Law

    Source: Ballotpedia

New Mexico does not require voters to present identification while voting, in most cases. However, if an individual registered to vote for the first time by mail and did not provide verification of his or her identity then, the voter will have to show identification.

Those voters can present the following forms of identification:

    • Current and valid photo identification
    • Current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card, or other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe, or pueblo that shows the voter’s name and current address

Some municipalities require identification when voting in local elections. Click here for more information.

    4. Order Your Absentee Mail Ballot

Deadline to apply for Absentee Mail Ballot: October 22, 2024

We recommend requesting your absentee mail ballot as soon as possible and well in advance of this deadline in order to ensure that you receive your ballot in time.

Eligible voters can now opt-in to the permanent absentee list to automatically be sent an absentee (mail-in) ballot for each statewide election by their county clerk. Voters can sign up for the permanent absentee list while requesting an absentee ballot through NMVOTE.ORG – the option is available during “Step 4 – Ballot Delivery Method” where the voter will check a box to be added to the list (if they are eligible). Voters can also sign up for the permanent absentee list by checking a box on the paper voter registration form. Voters can request to be removed from the list at any time by contacting their county clerk.

NOTE: Voters are not eligible for the permanent absentee list if they want their ballot delivered to an out of state address.

All absentee ballots may be returned to the County Clerk’s Office or any Election Day polling location.
