2024 CONNECTICUT VOTER GUIDE
1. Voter Registration
Deadline to Register/update: OCTOBER 18, 2024
(same day registration accepted in person on election day)
Election Day Registration
- Election Day Registration permits anyone to register and vote in person on Election Day who meets the eligibility requirements for voting in this state and is not already registered, OR is registered in one town but has moved to another town. By law, a person is eligible to register and vote if he or she is (1) a US citizen, (2) age 18 or older, (3) a bona fide resident of the town in which he or she applies for admission, and (4) has completed confinement and parole if previously convicted of a disfranchising felony.
- Election Day Registration is not available at your polling place, but is available at a designated EDR location in each town, beginning at 6 am and ending at 8 pm. You will register and vote at the designated EDR location in your town. Please plan to arrive early in the day as there may be long lines. You must be registered by 8 pm in order to vote. You will need to provide proof of identity and residency.

2. Check Your Registration
Why check your registration? Your address is where election officials send notices, application forms to receive your ballot in the mail, and more. Additionally, poll workers will check if the address on your voter registration matches the address on your ID at the polls.
Checklist:
- Is your name spelled correctly? (Correct hyphenations, middle initials, etc)
- Correct Address
- Active Voter Status (if inactive, update by sending in another online/mail voter application)
- Correct Date of Birth
- Correct Political Party preference
- Take a photo or screenshot of your completed registration, and take it with you to the polls.
3. Voter ID Law
Source: Ballotpedia
Connecticut requires voters to present non-photo identification (ID) while voting. Accepted forms of ID for most voters include social security cards or any other pre-printed form of ID containing the voter’s name and address, name and signature, or name and photograph.
First-time voters who registered by mail must present one of the following forms of identification to vote in an election with federal candidates on the ballot:
- Copy of a current and valid photo identification with the voter’s name and address, or
- Copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows the voter’s name and address.
Other voters must present one of the following forms of identification:
- Any re-printed form of identification that shows the voter’s name and address, name and signature, or name and photograph.
- Social security card.
4. Order your Mail Ballot
Deadline to register in order to receive mail Ballot: November 4th, 2024
Although you can technically send in an Absentee Mail voter application the day before Election Day, we recommend sending in the application at least 2 weeks in advance.
All registered Connecticut voters will be sent Mail Absentee ballots in the mail. You can also fill out an application below:
Absentee Ballot Fact Sheet: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/SOTS/ElectionServices/COVID-19/AB-Fact-Sheet-AUGUST-2020-PRIMARY.pdf
Deadline to return absentee mail Ballot: Must be received on or before Election Day, November 5, 2024
If you have filled out your absentee ballot, but do not believe it will be mailed in on time, you can drop off ballots at designated drop off at secure droboxes. There will be at least one drop-box located in each town. Find your local drop-box here: https://www.ctdata.org/ct-ballot-drop-box-locations
Surrendering Your Absentee Ballot:
- Connecticut has the Surrender Rule. If you want to vote in person on Election Day, you must surrender your mail ballot to the Municipal Clerk’s Office before 10 am Election Day to request that your absentee be withdrawn. The municipal clerk will mark your ballot as “rejected” and remove the ballot from the sealed package and return it to you, along with a signed statement stating that you have withdrawn your absentee ballot and may vote in person.
- On Election Day, you can present your “rejected” absentee ballot in order to vote in person.
